Despite the title being a steal from the Alison Krauss album, this is actually a blog about books and other new favorite things.

I am Loving New York

This evening I went to the Yarn Connection in NYC. Lucky for me, it is just a block from my hotel. Skeins and skeins of beautiful yarns in a very small space. Many of the customers just came in to visit with the owners/operators of the store.

I can understand why people write plays and scripts and poems all trying to capture single moments or impressions in New York City. My brain is in overdrive just thinking of details. I was in Barrett Park tonight sitting and enjoying the fountain and the moonlight on the park grounds. There isn't a single light inside the park, and I could see people's faces lit up from the glow of their laptops as they sat at tables to work, read, and talk. As I admired the lighting of the buildings surrounding the park I wondered at the incredible luck of such a full moon. I looked up and got an eyeful of huge stadium lights at the top of a nearby skyscraper pointed down at the park to provide the "moonlight." I laughed at myself and admired the person who decided to simulate bright moonlight instead of filling up a park with hundreds of decorative security lights. The effect is wonderful.

I'm in New York teaching a class for the company I work for, but I am still managing to get in some walking and gawking time. Grand Central Station was wonderful W&G spot, as was Broadway and Times Square at nighttime. Everyone who tells you that there is no pizza as good as NY pizza is RIGHT. Thin crispy crust with just the right amount of sauce and toppings. I had a slice for lunch and another for dinner, and if Little Italy was open for breakfast, I'd be there first thing tomorrow morning.

I didn't bring the digi camera, so I won't know until I get home if any of my pictures are any good. If they are, I'll scan and post. There was an anti-bush agenda parade down Broadway tonight, street performers, and people everywhere. I can tell you why Rocky Anderson wants SLC to have a night life: it is INTERESTING, and it makes the city feel alive and exciting. One of my students told me about a huge club that has several floors, performers, people swinging from the ceilings and walking around on stills. He said that there were about 10,000 people there each night. I laughed and told him that if you counted all the people at all the clubs in Utah combined on any given night you would come up with fewer than 10,000. I can even think of the statistics regarding stilt-walking.
